🏃♂️ Building a Brand from Park Running: Ed's 1000-Day Journey
Hey there my freedom seeking friend!
I've never met someone more committed to their sport than my friend Ed.
For over 1000+ days straight, he's been recording videos of his daily park runs.
His dedication isn't just inspiring, it's a potential goldmine for building a unique brand.
(He also happens to be an amazing human and as a respiratory specialist was an incredible support when my Mum was very ill, helping me with questions for the doctors. That's the kind of guy Ed is.)
But the one thing he’s doing so well, which so many of us (me included) aren’t so great at, is consistency. I’ve been saying it for years, consistent, focused, action is the name of the game.
So given that Ed already has that massive part of the puzzle figured out, he’s super close to creating an incredible business from his passion of park running.
Here's what I'd suggest he do next to monetize his passion (spoiler alert - this works for any niche you’re passionate about!):
1. Create a Lead Generator: Develop a free "Park Runner's Ultimate Guide" ebook. It could include tips on getting started, best practices for consistent running, and how to stay motivated. This would attract potential followers and customers and serve as a lead generator for his newsletter (see step 2).
2. Launch a Newsletter: Start "The Daily Dash," a newsletter about park running. Include training tips, gear reviews, inspiring stories from the community, and updates on Ed's personal journey. This builds a loyal audience.
3. Develop an E-commerce Business: Create a line of park running gear. Think custom water bottles, moisture-wicking t-shirts with motivational slogans, or even a signature pair of running shoes.
4. Promote to Newsletter Subscribers: Use the newsletter to showcase new products, offer exclusive discounts, and share behind-the-scenes content of product development.
5. Build a Community: Create a "Park Runners Unite" Facebook group or forum. This could be a place for runners to share experiences, ask questions, and support each other.
6. Monetise Through Multiple Channels: With this foundation, Ed could earn through e-commerce sales, newsletter sponsorships, brand partnerships, and even ticketed events like group runs or workshops.
The key to all of this is Ed's authenticity and dedication. His 1000+ days of consistent running and video creation have already laid the groundwork for a trusted brand.
Now it's just about structuring it in a way that provides value to others while creating income opportunities.
Ed can take his journey of daily runs and use it to inspire and lead a community of park runners. Now that's a powerful brand story. 💪

A common strategy which seems to pop up often is some type of affiliate marketing. (NB: It’s yet another way that Ed could increase his income by affiliating for other park running brands)

🥾 Free Walking Tours - (To save money & to make money!)
This week we had a fabulous walking tour of Toulouse with the lovely Harry (highly recommended), and it reminded me of other walking tours I’ve been on in Paris, Phuket, Yangon etc.
Not only a great way to save money (you tip what you want at the end), they are an amazing way to explore a new destination.
Just google the place you’re in and ‘free walking tour’ and if someone is doing one they’ll pop to the top!
You can also do self guided walking tours using the free app GPSmycity. (There is a paid upgrade for voice guided tours and more)
Walking tours are also a great way to make money!
Are you a slow traveller? Perhaps you’ve spent lots of time in a particular city or destination and would love to show people around and share some local knowledge. If that’s the case you could look into offering free walking tours.
We gave Harry 50 euros at the end of our 3 hour walking tour and I saw many 20’s, 10’s and more being handed over. There were maybe 20 people on our tour so if everyone tipped on average 10-20 euros, that’s around 200-400 euros for 3.5 hours exploring and talking about a place that you love.
NB: Some places will be easier than ever to set this up. I’m sure somewhere like France is probably pretty heavily regulated, however somewhere like Thailand or Vietnam for example, you could be up and running the same day if you can attract a crowd. Airbnb Experiences is a great resource to explore if offering tours appeals to you.

Bonjour from Port Grimmaud, just outside St Tropez.

We’ve been thoroughly enjoying our mini French adventure. Stop 1, was a fab free walking tour (you tip at the end) around Toulouse, a fascinating city rich in history with architectural gems like Saint-Sernin Basilica and Capitole de Toulouse.

I love free walking tours. The guides rely on good tips so they give it their all and their knowledge of the area, it’s history, myths and legends is unsurpassed. An excellent way to explore a new city! (See nomad tip of the week)
Stop 2 was a beautiful ancient village called Narbonne for dinner and a night with friends. Its charm lies in its Roman heritage, it’s huge cathedral, and the lovely Canal de la Robine that flows through the town.

Stop 3 was Perpignan, the former capital of the Kingdom of Majorca. We only had a couple of hours here, so walked about to get a quick glance at the Palace of the Kings, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the elegant details at Hôtel Pams.

Stop 4, was a fabulous converted guest house in the mountains of Reynes at the foothills of the Pyrenees, with one of my besties, who’s recently moved there with her partner. 3 days of hikes, tapas, cheese, wine and great company. Plus a walk around the ancient town of Ceret, said to have inspired and been inhabited by some of the artistic greats such as Picasso and Matisse.

Stop 5 was a quick walk around the beautiful city of Arles on route to St Tropez. Well worth a longer visit, Arles houses a huge Roman amphitheater, an ancient Roman necropolis (once one of the most famous cemeteries in the Western world) and was also home for a year to Van Gogh.

Stop 6 is where we are now, 20 mins west of St Tropez in a beautiful marina called Port Grimmaud staying at a friends Airbnb and on Monday we’ll explore the famous city of Cannes en route to Nice!

The South of France is beautiful (albeit a tad chilly right now) and whether you love art or architecture, history or modernity, oceans, mountains or cities, the south of France has it all. Definitely a road trip worth doing and adding to your bucket list!
