Overcoming loneliness

Plus starting all over again

šŸ„° Overcoming Loneliness

Hey There Nomad!

Working remotely whether from home or while travelling has itā€™s downsides.

One of the biggest issues is loneliness. It can get pretty isolating sitting behind a laptop all day, and even more so if youā€™re also travelling solo.

Here are some strategies to combat loneliness (on your own terms) and make some great friends along the way!

  1. Go on Group Tours: Join day trips or multi-day tours to meet fellow travellers and explore new places together.

  2. Utilize Co-working Spaces: These hubs are perfect for meeting fellow remote workers and locals. Many offer networking events and workshops. (Not just for travelling - if you work from home there may well be a co-working space in your vicinity)

  3. Join Online Communities: Platforms like Nomad List, Reddit's r/digitalnomad, or Facebook groups for digital nomads can provide virtual support and meetup opportunities.

  4. Attend Local Events: Use apps like Meetup or Eventbrite to find gatherings aligned with your interests, from language exchanges to hobby groups.

  5. Volunteer: Use sites like workaway.info or helpx.net to find volunteering opportunities which not only reduces travel expenses, but ensures you meet lots of people while improving your skill sets!

  6. Take Classes: Whether it's a cooking class or dance lesson, learning local skills can help you meet people and immerse in the culture.

  7. Stay in Social Accommodations: Hostels or co-living spaces often organize social activities and attract like-minded travellers.

  8. Maintain Home Connections: Regular video calls with friends and family can provide a sense of continuity and support.

  9. Use Language Exchange Apps: Platforms like Tandem or HelloTalk can help you meet locals while improving your language skills.

  10. Find a Business Collaborator: Partner with another nomad on projects to combine work and socializing.

šŸ”— Sunday Shareables

Hereā€™s a few interesting tidbits & tips Iā€™ve been pondering/exploring this week, which I hope youā€™ll find interesting or useful.

  1. If youā€™re thinking about creating and promoting an online course, I highly recommend testing the market with mini courses. The Leap by Thinkific (not an affiliate link) is a fab tool built purely for mobile consumers. You can create quizzes, tutorials, guides, etc using just your phone. You can also create a store, landing pages and everything you need to attract and convert customers. Iā€™m 100% going to be playing with this tool in the coming weeks. Will publish my results here!

  2. A couple of weeks ago I answered a community question about email platforms. Since doing the research for that question I have been obsessed with Substack. I started playing with it a year or so ago, but havenā€™t given it much thought, however, if youā€™re looking for somewhere to create a ā€˜social blogā€™ and build an email newsletter all in one, the platform is fantastic. Iā€™m still in the investigative, exploring stage but would love for you to come and follow me over there and read my latest post - The Good, The Bad & The Furry: Lessons in House Sitting. šŸ˜ŠšŸ™

  3. Remember Polly Pocket? Now you can stay in her house, for real. Would you stay here?

  4. Weā€™re quite a way from this actually becoming a reality yet, but would you fly in an electric plane?

On that note, I feel itā€™s important to acknowledge the tragic plane crash in Brazil this week that claimed 61 lives. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this devastating event. It's a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and how important it is to cherish every moment we have with those we love. ā¤ļø

šŸļø From Nomad Child to an 18th in London

For those who have just joined the newsletter, Iā€™m currently housesitting my way around the UK - (hereā€™s an update of where I am and what Iā€™m doing).

This week was my daughters 18th, which seems crazy and makes me feel old! šŸ˜‚

We had a riotous time out in London and I can highly recommend the following activities, should you visit. And if not, see if there are any similar activities near you for some fun times!

A week to remember thatā€™s for sure!

Thatā€™s one of the things I missed most in Phuket, just having a plethora of entertainment options at your fingertips.

Itā€™s a balance though. Sometimes you want to be entertained and sometimes you just want to relax on a beach or enjoy the serenity of the countryside.

Thatā€™s the joy of being a nomad! šŸ˜Ž

 šŸ’” Community Question

This was a question posed in the FB Group this week;

If you were starting again, Jo, knowing the current state of online marketing and competition levels, what would you start doing as an online business?

Course creation, drop shipping, FBA, marketing your own physical products, being a service provider - like running an SMM agency or web designer, affiliate marketing, or something else?

My answer;

It really depends on you & your goals.

All models still work and though it looks like thereā€™s a lot more competition thereā€™s also a lot of rubbish, so thereā€™s still plenty of room for cream to rise to the top.

However no matter which business model youā€™re drawn to, I would 100% choose the same entry model. Whether ecom, service biz, influencer, courses etc, pick a niche and audience, start an email newsletter & grow your list.

Once you have an engaged email list they will become your audience and customers or clients for whatever youā€™re launching. Then both pick a model that aligns with your personality & goals and create products and offers your audience wants/needs.

(I also added a P.S.)

P.S. For my personality in particular I love sharing/teaching & I love coming up with physical product ideas, so digital courses & communities + ecom are the models for me.
