💻 14 Best Remote Work Tools for the Modern Nomad
Hey There Nomad!
As a digital nomad, having the right tools can boost our productivity, ease our workflow and make our travels smoother and more seamless.
Here's a list of essential tools I personally use and recommend:
Video Conferencing: Zoom and Google Meet for clear, reliable virtual meetings. I find google meet easier and faster to fire up than Zoom, but the free plan is restricted to 60 minutes.
Task Organization: Trello for visual, intuitive project and task management. I’m a visual person so being able to see tasks like post it notes on a board helps my disorganised mind.
Brainstorming: Mindnode for creative idea mapping and organization. An absolute gem for getting ideas out of your head and organised in a visual way.
Freelance Hiring: Upwork for finding skilled professionals for one-off jobs. I use for all my short term or one off projects - although it’s getting more and more expensive, so if you use something else you recommend do let me know!
File Collaboration: Google Drive for real-time document collaboration. I’m just transitioning my husband from excel & word to Google docs & sheets. You can share everything with a click of a button and it’s all automatically saved and stored and available on all devices.
Large File Transfers: Dropbox for seamless sharing of sizeable files. I don’t use as much as I used to as I don’t do as many videos, graphics these days, but it’s still my top platform for sharing and storing big files.
VPN: ExpressVPN for secure, private internet connections worldwide. Lots of Nomads recommend Surfshark. I’ll be researching the differences and reporting back!
AI Assistance: ChatGPT and Claude for content creation, research, and problem-solving. My new best friends!
Graphic Design: Canva for user-friendly, professional-looking designs. I’m not a designer in any sense of the word. Canva is a life saver!
Password Management: LastPass for secure storage and easy access to credentials. We’re on a family plan, which means we can all access each others in an emergency.
Note-Taking: Notes! I used to be mainly Evernote and more recently Notion, which I do use for comprehensive note organization and project planning. However Notes is so easy to access and use on both my mac & iphone, plus you can organise into folders and use hashtags etc, in the last few months it’s become my go to for writing articles, newsletters, social media posts, shopping lists, travel plans and everything in between.
Currency Conversion: XE.com for quick and accurate exchange rate calculations. Download the app and add to your phone screen when travelling.
Journaling: Day One for maintaining a digital travel diary and personal reflections. It has end to end encryption, functionality to have multiple journals etc. It’s been my go to for years.
International Payments: Wise (formerly TransferWise) for cost-effective global transactions. I love Wise and rarely use a ‘traditional’ bank for anything anymore.
Tools I’m Exploring;
I’m thinking of making the move from mac to ipad! I have a little 12 inch macbook which is small, light and great for travel and they don’t do them anymore! The smallest I can get is a 13 inch macbook air and it feels much bigger and heavier than mine. So I’m looking at an 11 inch ipad pro. But the operating system is different so am just exploring at the moment. If you’ve moved from an mac to an ipad, do please let me know how you found the transition!
Polarsteps, Momento, Wanderlust, Tripit - I’m looking at the various online travel journal apps to record our adventures. The jury is out as to the best one yet, I’ll let you know once I’ve tested them all. Let me know if you have a favourite.
What have I missed/do you use in your online business dealings or travel adventures? Hit reply and let me know or come and post in the group. :)
